Calcium is an important second messenger that is released into the cytosol after recognition of various environmental stimuli. Several members of Calmodulin-like proteins (CMLs) act as calcium sensors. The present study shows that CML9 might be a regulator involved in the defense against biotrophic pathogens, rather than arthropod herbivores as insects and spider mites.
